WASHINGTON, D.C.-Today, Congressman Pat Harrigan (NC-10) voted in favor of H.R. 3617, the Securing America's Critical Minerals Supply Act, legislation to strengthen U.S. energy and national security by identifying and addressing critical vulnerabilities in America's mineral and energy supply chains.
"America should never be dependent on foreign adversaries for the materials that power our economy, our energy grid, or our military," said Congressman Harrigan. "Right now, too many of the minerals we rely on are controlled by countries that do not have our interests at heart. This bill takes a clear-eyed look at where we're exposed, forces the federal government to confront those risks, and puts us on a path toward building secure, reliable supply chains here at home. If we care about energy independence, economic strength, and national security, this work is not optional."
The Securing America's Critical Minerals Supply Act strengthens the Department of Energy's role in safeguarding U.S. energy security by requiring comprehensive assessments of supply-chain risks tied to critical minerals and other essential energy resources. The bill directs DOE to identify vulnerabilities stemming from foreign dependence, evaluate domestic production and processing capacity, and develop strategies to expand U.S.-based sourcing, recycling, and diversification. It also establishes regular reporting requirements to ensure transparency and accountability to Congress.
With House passage, the legislation now moves to the Senate for consideration.
