Erie, PA - The Erie County Department of Health (ECDH) is making significant strides in its contact tracing efforts following a confirmed case of measles in an Erie County child on Sunday March 30. To date, ECDH staff have successfully contacted over 200 people identified as potential exposures.
With any measles case, the priority is reaching out to vulnerable populations who may not have been able to receive vaccination due to medical conditions or age. Through cooperation and coordination with all involved locations, contact lists were received within 24 hours, allowing for the prompt initiation of contact tracing. A total of 227 contacts were identified with outreach efforts ensuring that each person received important information regarding the measles virus, including symptoms and quarantine procedures, if necessary.
To date no additional measles cases have been reported. ECDH will continue to work closely with childcare providers, schools, and healthcare facilities. Within the next week, ECDH will be facilitating educational opportunities for childcare facilities as their population can be significantly impacted with just one case of measles. Information has been distributed to school districts and healthcare facilities as well.
In any instance, it is important to return contact tracing calls from ECDH. As we continue to reach out to people who have been exposed, please return calls at 814-451-6700 or 814-451-6707.
This investigation leads into National Public Health Week, April 7-13, where public health staff are recognized for the often "invisible" work that they do. The Erie County Department of Health will continue to work diligently to support the health of the Erie community.
