Chandler, Ariz. - Chandler Councilmember Jane Poston has been reappointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) Public Safety and Crime Prevention Committee. Poston was elected to her third one-year term to provide strategic direction and guidance for the committee's federal advocacy agenda and policy priorities.

"Work on this committee is advocating for policy action that addresses issues facing Chandler and our public safety professionals," said Councilmember Poston. "It provides a critical touchpoint to pursue sensible solutions with policymakers in Congress and federal agencies that can directly benefit our community's safety."

The NLC committee's priorities mirror Chandler's focus on community-oriented policing, integrated crisis response, and fire/emergency medical service readiness. This includes expanding evidence-based crime prevention and social safety net approaches that engage behavioral health, housing and substance-use services. These are areas where Chandler is investing in police-community relationships and crisis response partnership models.

The committee will focus on policies to reform the Federal Emergency Management Agency and disaster programs, so communities receive faster, more predictable relief and stronger investments for mitigation. It will push to protect core public safety grants and modernize emergency communications, ranging from next generation 9-1-1 to interoperable radio systems. These priorities align with Chandler Fire and Police commitment to reliable communications and regional emergency management preparedness.

The committee will advocate for federal funding that supports the next generation of first responder and 9-1-1 staffing through recruitment, retention, training, behavioral health and wellness. It also will pursue funding and federal action that address cancer risks facing firefighters and solutions that speed up the manufacturing and delivery of fire and emergency medical service apparatus. These issues directly impact Chandler's ability to equip and modernize its public safety response to best serve the community.

Councilmember Poston began serving on the Chandler City Council in January 2023. She also serves on the Maricopa Association of Governments Transportation Policy Committee.
