The House passed a narrow, Republican-drafted health care bill (H.R. 6703) Dec. 17 on a near party-line vote. The package includes limited reforms related to pharmacy benefit managers, cost-sharing reductions, and association health plans. However, the bill is unlikely to advance in the Senate and does not address the Affordable Care Act's enhanced premium tax credits (EPTCs), which are set to expire on Jan. 1.
Meanwhile, four moderate Republicans-Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), Ryan Mackenzie (R-Pa.), Rob Bresnahan (R-Pa.), and Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.)-have joined House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries' discharge petition to force a vote on a three-year EPTC extension. When the House returns in January, lawmakers will be required to vote on the subsidy extension.
Looking ahead, Congress will also return in January to mounting pressure to fund the government before the current continuing resolution expires on Jan. 30.
The Senate and House are out of session until Jan. 5, 2026.
