(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is planning to remove and replace the Providence Road bridge over Interstate 70 as part of its Improve I-70 program. Construction is currently anticipated to begin in late May, with significant impacts to travel in the area during the project.
The Providence Road bridge provides an important connection between north and south Columbia and serves as a primary entrance into the Business Loop corridor. The replacement project presents an opportunity not only to modernize aging infrastructure, but also to improve safety, accessibility and the overall appearance of this gateway into the city.
The City of Columbia and the Business Loop Community Improvement District (CID) are partnering to support aesthetic and multimodal enhancements to the new bridge. The CID Board has approved a $100,000 contribution toward the City's I-70 Beautification Project, which will help fund features designed to create a more welcoming and visually distinctive entrance into The Loop.
Planned improvements to the new bridge include decorative lighting, enhanced railings and fencing, stone-pattern retaining walls, bridge facade elements and integrated lighting features. These enhancements are intended to elevate the corridor's visual identity and create a more distinctive and welcoming gateway for residents and visitors alike.
"Improving infrastructure, enhancing safety and beautifying the entrances onto The Loop are all goals of the Loop CID," said CID Chair Michele Batye. "We're excited to help elevate this space to reflect the pride and energy of our community. We encourage others to join us in this transformational effort."
During recent community planning efforts, Columbia residents identified the intersection of Business Loop 70 and Providence Road as a central focal point of The Loop. Enhancing the bridge that connects directly to this area is expected to support economic activity, strengthen connectivity and create a stronger sense of place for residents and visitors.
Drivers should expect lane closures, detours and changes to traffic patterns during construction. Travelers are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra time and consider alternate routes when possible. Additional details about traffic impacts and project timelines will be shared by MoDOT as they become available.
MoDOT is leading the bridge replacement as part of its broader Improve I-70 effort between Rocheport and Columbia, which focuses on improving safety, reliability and capacity along this critical corridor. For updates on the project and related improvements, visit
