On 10 December 2025, Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, the European Commissioner for Energy, Dan Joergensen, and the Assistant Secretary of the United States Department of Energy, Tommy Joyce, to NATO Headquarters for a meeting with Allies in the North Atlantic Council.
The Secretary General addressed the vital role of energy for Allied security and defence. Allies are learning the lessons from Ukraine, where Russia is deliberately targeting and damaging critical energy infrastructure as part of its war strategy. To stay safe now and in the future, NATO relies on timely and sufficient supplies of energy, particularly of fuel for the armed forces, on robust energy infrastructure, and on reliable supply chains of energy technologies and raw materials. Mr Rutte emphasised the need for defence and energy decision makers to work closely together to meet these requirements, and that security and defence must be built into energy policies across the Euro-Atlantic area.
