Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use daily. Have you ever counted how many devices you use that contain these batteries? More importantly, have you ever thought about the importance of fire safety when charging these devices?
Lithium-ion batteries store high energy and can become unstable if damaged, misused, or exposed to extreme temperatures, leading to overheating, fires, or explosions.
Charging our devices safely is extremely important in preventing lithium-ion battery fires - so keep these tips in mind:
Cheap charger? Don't chance it. Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. The wrong charger can damage the battery and cheap or off-brand chargers may not meet safety standards.
A hard surface is a must. Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or bare floor. Soft surfaces like beds, pillows, and couches can trap heat, causing the battery to overheat and catch fire.
Feels hot? Stop using it. Stop using your device if it feels very hot, starts to swell, leaks, smells strange, or makes popping sounds.
Fully charged? Unplug it. Unplug your device when it is fully charged and don't leave it plugged in overnight while you're sleeping. Leaving a device plugged in too long can increase heat and stress on the battery.
Tools and rides, charge them outside! Charge large devices like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. These batteries are larger and store more energy so fires can grow quickly if the battery fails. If charging inside, never block exits when charging and always charge within sight.
Remember, battery safety starts before you plug in your device - only buy products listed by a nationally recognized manufacturer such as UL, ETL or CSA. Listed products meet important safety standards.
Working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan can help make a life-saving difference, too!
