As temperatures rise and families spend more time outdoors, June's Brain Awareness Month serves as an important reminder that many common summer activities can pose risks to the brain and spine if proper precautions aren't taken.
From bicycle rides and boating excursions to backyard projects and family vacations, a few simple safety measures can help prevent serious injuries and keep Hoosiers healthy all summer long. Many of the brain and spine injuries during the summer months are preventable. Taking a few extra precautions before participating in outdoor activities can significantly reduce the risk of life-altering injuries.
Wear a Helmet Every Ride
Whether you're riding a bicycle, scooter, skateboard or participating in other wheeled activities, a properly fitted helmet can significantly reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury. E-bikes are also continuing to grow in popularity among both teens and adults, but their higher speeds can increase the risk of serious injuries when crashes occur. Always wear a properly fitted helmet, follow traffic laws, avoid distractions while riding and make sure riders understand how quickly e-bikes can accelerate.
A local Indianapolis teen recently shared her recovery journey after suffering a severe brain injury in an e-bike crash, highlighting the importance of riding with proper safety precautions.
Stay Hydrated
Dehydration can lead to dizziness, headaches, fatigue and an increased risk of falls, particularly among older adults. Drink water regularly throughout the day, especially during outdoor activities.
Watch Your Step
Uneven sidewalks, hiking trails, wet surfaces and yard debris can increase the risk of falls that may cause head injuries or spinal fractures. Wear supportive footwear and remain alert when walking on unfamiliar terrain.
Take Breaks During Road Trips
Extended periods of sitting can contribute to neck and back pain. During long drives, stop every one to two hours to walk, stretch and reset your posture.
Practice Ladder Safety
Summer home improvement projects often lead to falls, one of the leading causes of traumatic brain injuries. When using a ladder:
Prioritize Boating and Water Safety
Unexpected falls, collisions and water-related accidents can cause serious head and neck injuries. Always wear a life jacket and never operate a boat while impaired. It's also important to remember never to dive into a pool, lake or other body of water unless you know the depth. Diving into shallow water can result in severe spinal cord injuries in an instant.
Don't Overlook Adult Sports Injuries
Activities such as pickleball, tennis, golf and softball can result in concussions and spine injuries. Warm up before activity and seek medical attention if you experience symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, confusion or neck pain following a fall or collision.
Know the Warning Signs
Following a head or neck injury, symptoms such as persistent headaches, dizziness, confusion, weakness, numbness, balance problems or severe neck pain should never be ignored. Prompt medical evaluation can help identify serious injuries and improve outcomes.
By practicing safe habits throughout the summer, individuals and families can help protect their brains and spinal cords while enjoying seasonal activities.
