February 4, 2026, OAKLAND COUNTY, MI. - As part of the federal funding bill signed last night, $2 million was approved by Congress to back Oakland County's public transit progress. Congresswoman Haley Stevens (D-Birmingham) secured the federal funding after working with Oakland County leaders for the past two years to support the Oakland County Transit fleet expansion project.
"This would not be possible without Congresswoman Haley Stevens' advocacy," said Oakland County Board of Commissioners Chair David T. Woodward (D-Royal Oak). "She is a strong champion for public transportation. Her leadership will help Oakland Transit secure more buses, which will increase capacity to provide more rides for a greater number of people across the county."
The $2 million federal funding allows Oakland Transit to expand its fleet with 16 new busses, translating to 100,000 more rides a year.
"When we support more easily accessible transit, we support residents getting where they need to go, while also making transportation more affordable and strengthening our local economy," Woodward said. "We've made tremendous progress in a short timeframe, and these funds help us build on that progress this year."
The 2024 Oakland Transit annual report reported nearly 4 million transit rides made, more than 5,500 free rides for veterans, 66 new vehicles added to the fleet, and an addition of nearly 150 of travel miles added to expanded routes.
"This project has been years in the making, and we couldn't have done it without strong local partners including my friend Dave Woodward" said Congresswoman Stevens. "I'm proud to have secured this federal investment to improve transit reliability and help get Michiganders to school, to work, and around Oakland County."
Oakland Transit and the Board's Oakland Transit Ad Hoc Committee will begin planning the transit fleet expansion.
