The UNM-Taos Office of the Chancellor has recently announced Maisie Baca as its new director of student affairs at the branch campus.
Baca brings over 30 years of experience working in higher education beginning her journey as an administrative assistant at UNM-Taos. Since then, she has gained a wide range of experience in student affairs working in financial aid, advising, and registrar roles at UNM, UNM-Los Alamos and most recently UNM-Valencia. She is passionate about creating systems that foster equity, student success, and institutional effectiveness, all while prioritizing student support, mentorship, and inclusive programming.
Baca earned her associate's degree at UNM-Taos before moving on to earn her bachelor's degree at UNM and master's degree at Colorado Tech University in Business Management and Organizational Leadership & Change.
Originally from Taos, N.M., Baca is excited to bring her experience back to her community and to help lead the student affairs team in the mission of empowering our students.
Interim Director Christal Martinez has been invaluable to the college during her tenure in the position. She led multiple improvements during her seven months as head of student affairs and strengthened the team dynamic in the department.
Martinez is moving to the position of associate director of Admissions and Outreach. Her experience in outreach and financial aid, as well as her passion for helping students, will contribute greatly to the growing UNM-Taos team. As associate director, Martinez will be able to provide leadership and guidance, and continue to support student affairs.
