Washington, DC-Below is a statement by U.S. Conference of Mayors CEO and Executive Director Tom Cochran in response to recent anti-Muslim attacks against New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani:
"As our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we are reminded that the American experiment rests on the protection of individual liberty and the belief that people of different backgrounds and faiths can live together as equal participants in our democracy. That diversity remains one of our nation's greatest strengths. At a time when our country faces serious challenges, our elected leaders should be working to bring people together, not casting suspicion on neighbors who simply practice their faith.
"Mayors carry the profound responsibility and privilege of leading communities where people of every faith and background live, work and raise their families side by side. Civility matters. Respect for our shared humanity matters. These deeply American values require us to reject rhetoric that seeks to divide people or question their place in our communities.
"The nation's mayors stand with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Our country is strongest when every resident in our communities is respected as an individual and able to participate fully in civic life."
