From subjects ranging from science to art - taking shape as oral, poster and even audio or visual presentations - research projects from undergraduate students from across The University of New Mexico will be showcased April 11 at the annual Undergraduate Research Opportunity Conference (UROC).
The free, campuswide event is organized by the Undergraduate Research, Arts and Design Network (URAD). It will be held in various locations in the Student Union Building from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
"As New Mexico's premier R1 institution, UNM provides our undergraduate students in every discipline regular opportunities to work closely with faculty mentors on groundbreaking research across an ever-widening variety of disciplines," said URAD Director Tim Schroeder.
UNM's Research 1 (commonly known as R1) designation is the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education Very High Research Spending and Doctorate Production. UNM is one of 187 R1 institutions nationwide.
UROC will feature UNM students presenting their research in a number of formats, from traditional 10-minute oral presentations to three-minute elevator pitch competitions as well as interactive video game displays. An awards ceremony will be held at the conclusion of the event.
One featured session at UROC is the UNM Grand Challenge Undergraduate Water and Climate Science Communication Fellows presentations, which is made possible with support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Infrastructure Workforce Development Program and the UNM Accelerating Resilience Innovations in Drylands (ARID) Institute.
The Grand Challenge Water and Climate Science Communication Fellowship pairs undergraduate students with research mentors who study water or climate to develop a communications project based on their mentor's research. This year, there are 14 fellows from 12 different majors and five minors, as well as 16 mentors. The in-person presentation will be 2-5 p.m. in SUB Acoma A/B.
There is also a Zoom option for the Water and Climate Science Communication Fellowship session:
