Texas Health Leaders Push for Tax Credits Extension

By: TAHP | Friday, December 5, 2025

What's new: In an op-ed in the Austin American-Statesman, TAHP joined the Texas Hospital Association and the Texas Medical Association to urge Congress to extend federal tax credits that keep private coverage affordable.

Why it matters: Without these tax credits, employers face higher premiums, families face higher out-of-pocket costs, and Texas risks the largest coverage losses in the nation.

By the numbers:

  • Coverage loss hits Texas hardest: 1.04 million Texans would lose coverage, about 26% of all losses nationwide.
  • Uninsured rises to 20%: Up from 16%, reversing recent gains.
  • Unpaid hospital care grows: Uncompensated care increases by $1.521 billion, from $6.798 billion to $8.319 billion.

What leaders can do now:

  • Extend tax relief: Keep enhanced tax credits in place so families can afford private coverage and Texas avoids the nation's largest loss of insurance.
  • Protect program integrity: Keep eligibility checks strong so help reaches Texans who qualify and to protect consumers and taxpayers from potential fraud.

The bottom line: Texas cannot afford to let tax relief expire. Extending federal tax credits is the fastest ways to keep private coverage affordable for families and employers while protecting Texas doctors and hospitals from rising uncompensated care.

Breaking it all down: The Texas Tribune does a deep a dive on tax credits, open enrollment, and everything Texans need to know.

TAHP resources to know: Our one pager on the loss of tax credits and recent presentation show how Texas is hit hardest among the states.
