Defendant’s State Hospital Commitment Extended

DATE: September 25, 2025

CASE: Jalonie Porter (Case #11F01801)

PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Sylvia La Rosa, Mental Health Litigation Unit

On August 9, 2013, Jalonie Porter was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon with an enhancement for great bodily injury. The charges stem from Porter slashing the victim's face with a knife, causing a laceration to her lip and two of her fingers as she attempted to block the knife. Porter was sentenced to serve a determinate prison sentence with the California Department of Corrections.

On May 1, 2017, the Department of State Hospitals (DSH) determined that Porter fit the criteria as an offender with a mental disorder and transferred him to DSH. On November 7, 2024, the District Attorney's Office filed a petition to extend his commitment, which expired on April 30, 2025.

On September 18, 2025, a jury unanimously found that Porter continues to suffer from a mental disease, defect or disorder and currently represents a substantial danger to others. Porter's commitment to Department of State Hospitals was successfully extended for one year.
