HKIA Anticipates about 800 Flight Movements and 100 Cancellations on September 8 under Tropical Cyclone Tapah

(Hong Kong, 8 September 2025, 1030hrs) - Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) anticipates to handle approximately 800 flights today as the Flight Rescheduling Control System is implemented in response to Tropical Cyclone Tapah. With inclement weather continuing to affect flight operations, about 100 flight cancellations are expected today.

Under the impact of crosswinds, 20 flights were diverted to other destinations as of 1000hrs due to safety concerns. Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) is working closely with the airlines, relevant government departments and the airport community, with the Airport Emergency Centre remaining operational.

AAHK advises passengers to check with their airlines for the latest flight information and proceed to the airport only when their seats and flight times are confirmed. Passengers may also visit HKIA's website or use the "My HKG" mobile app for checking latest flight information.

The operations of HKIA remained largely smooth last night. A total of 40 flights landed between 0001hrs to 0430hrs. AAHK maintained close communication with the Civil Aviation Department and airlines, while Immigration and other departments deployed additional manpower to handle passenger arrivals and departures.

AAHK also closely communicated with the MTR Corporation, which added two Airport Express Link services to the schedule and extended its operations to 0130hrs. AAHK's Taxi Queue Ticket System has been operating smoothly. The system enables passengers to receive queue numbers via ticket kiosks or a mobile application, without having to wait in line for taxis. After the last train of the Airport Express Link departed from the airport last night, about 200 passengers had queued for taxi and all departed around 0400hrs.

A temporary rest area for passengers was set up in the terminal, equipped with 500 chairs, mobile charging stations, and additional amenities. Extra staff were deployed to provide assistance to passengers and distribute supplies such as bottled water, snacks and blankets. A number of restaurants and convenience stores at HKIA continued to operate during the typhoon last night, with some opening 24 hours.

More than 1,000 staff stayed at the airport to serve passengers last night. To maintain adequate staffing for airport operations and passenger services, AAHK has set up two staff rest centres with a capacity for over 400 employees. A staff shuttle bus service between the airport and the Tung Chung MTR station was also provided by AAHK.
