WASHINGTON - On Thursday, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will present a webinar on protecting consumers against impersonation scams.
The webinar, "FTC Enforcement of the Impersonation Rule to Protect Consumers from Scams," will feature important information for the network of 129 civil legal services organizations who receive grant funding from LSC, as well as other advocates and service providers who work to protect consumers. LSC grantees provide services to low-income Americans and seniors who have been the victims of scams and fraud.
Scams impersonating businesses and government entities are consistently among the top frauds reported to the FTC. According to the FTC, in 2025, these scams resulted in $3.5 billion in consumer losses.
The FTC has a special rule to address these scams, which will be the focus of the webinar. The Government and Business Impersonation Rule prohibits impersonating or mispresenting an affiliation with government, businesses and their officials or agents. The rule also allows the FTC to seek consumer redress from and civil penalties against violators.
Attendees will learn the steps that service providers can take to protect people who have been targeted by these schemes, as well as how to report fraud to the FTC. FTC attorneys also will share free resources about avoiding impersonation scams that advocates can share with clients.
The April 30 virtual event begins at 3:30 p.m. ET and is open for public registration.
