(Updated at 17:00 hrs NST on 26 August 2026)

Nepal was struck by severe flash floods this morning, resulting in loss of life, widespread displacement and extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and other critical infrastructure.

Nepal's security and disaster-management agencies, local authorities and health services have been fully mobilised for search and rescue, evacuation, emergency medical assistance and relief operations. Authorities are also closely monitoring river systems and downstream flood risks.

So far, 72 bodies have been recovered, while many people are still feared missing. According to the latest available information, 403 people from 25 countries, including Nepal, have been reported missing- 203 males and 200 females. Of these, 62 are Nepali nationals and 341 are foreign nationals. These figures remain subject to verification as search and rescue operations continue.

At this stage, our immediate priority is to save lives and support search and rescue, evacuation and relief efforts in the affected areas. In view of the extensive damage caused by the floods, the Government will continue to assess the situation and emerging needs on the ground and, where necessary, communicate specific requirements for assistance through established official channels.
