Statement from Congresswoman Joyce Beatty on the Retirement Announcement of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Today, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) released the following statement after Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi announced she would not seek another term in the House of Representatives:

"Nancy Pelosi's brilliance, courage, and leadership have shaped the U.S. Congress and our nation, blazing a remarkable trail for those who have walked with her and for generations who will follow. A historic and visionary public servant, she was the first woman to serve as House Democratic Whip and as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, leading the passage of the Affordable Care Act, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the American Rescue Plan, along with countless other measures that changed lives and strengthened our democracy. Her impact is immeasurable, and our nation is better because of her principled and bold leadership."

"During her years leading House Democrats, she navigated trials and tribulations that would test any leader, from a once-in-a-century pandemic to the January 6th attack on our Capitol, the violent assault on her husband, and other extraordinary challenges. Through it all, she led with grace, strength, and dignity. Her command of the House floor and her mastery in leading House Democrats are both inspiration and instruction for current and future Speakers."

"Personally, Speaker Pelosi has been an extraordinary mentor, trusted friend, and wise counselor. In my first speech before the nation at the Democratic National Convention, she yielded her time to me, giving me the runway I needed to make my point and to soar. That gesture spoke volumes about her belief in lifting others, especially women, to use their voices boldly and without apology. While Speaker Pelosi initiated the 'When Women Succeed, America Succeeds' initiative, she paved the way for me to ask President Obama to include the phrase in his State of the Union address. Thank you, Nancy, for making the nation recognize the strength, courage, influence and promise of women."

"Nancy Pelosi's love of country is surpassed only by her love for her family. We owe immense gratitude to the entire Pelosi family - Paul, their children, and grandchildren - for their years of sacrifice and support that made her historic service possible."

"I am honored to have served alongside, and to have learned from, the greatest Speaker in American history, and I am grateful to also call her my friend."
