Opening remarks by EAM Dr. S Jaishankar during his meeting with FM Toshimitsu Motegi of Japan (May 25, 2025)

Excellency,

let me welcome you back to New Delhi. We had recently met in France in March and you were here in the beginning of the year in Delhi. So, it is very good to see you back, and it is very good to see you for the very important meeting we will have tomorrow.

Between India and Japan, of course, we have a Special Strategic and Global Partnership and that signals that our ties have a larger implication, larger importance, larger impact, and one example of that will be tomorrow, when we meet in the Quad format to discuss how to advance our Free and Open Indo - Pacific.

Today, I look forward to discussing our bilateral cooperation, to discussing global and regional issues and I think, particularly, in this current situation of what is happening in West Asia or the Middle East is important, because we are both energy importing nations, we are big trading nations, we have maritime interests. I would also like to discuss with you economic security issues because I think today that is very important as a concern for all major economies.

So, once again a very very warm welcome, very good to see you back, and I would request you for your opening remarks.
