San Diego fee policy item postponed

The San Diego City Council did not take up a proposed fee and screening ordinance this week after the item, originally scheduled for discussion on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, was deferred and set to be rescheduled for a future date.

California Apartment Association members and concerned residents generated nearly 2,000 letters to the council opposing the proposal, which would cap fees for parking, pets, trash and other services, restrict tenant screening practices, and impose new advertising and disclosure requirements on rental housing operations.

CAA opposes the measure, saying it would reduce cost recovery, add compliance burdens and make rental housing harder to operate in the city. The city has not yet announced a new hearing date. CAA will continue monitoring the proposal and update members when the item is scheduled to return.
