Generating economy with equity

In the framework of International Women's Day 2026, the EU Delegation opened its doors to the public on 5 March hosting the event "Generating economy with equity", a dialogue forum dedicated to reflecting on the importance of women's economic empowerment and the challenges that remain in achieving equality in the economic sphere.

Deputy Head of Mission Jan Dzieciolowski opened the event and welcomed attendees, highlighting the importance the European Union places on gender equality as a fundamental value that must be achieved. Regarding gender equality in the economic sphere, he emphasized that it goes beyond simply discussing employment or income: it is about the real possibility for women to make their own decisions, build their life projects, and participate fully in social, political, and economic life.

Through two panels-one with representatives from civil society organizations and the other with representatives from public institutions, international organizations and Member States-experiences and reflections were shared on the progress achieved, as well as on the areas where further work is needed to guarantee equal opportunities and women's economic autonomy. The importance of involving all sectors of society to generate lasting change was also emphasized.

The event was backed by the Uruguayan Chamber of Commerce and Services, the Uruguayan Organization of Women Entrepreneurs and Businesswomen, the Uruguayan Exporters Union, the Nordic Chamber of Commerce in Uruguay, the Association of Women in Energy, the National Development Agency, the National Institute for Women, UN Women and the French Embassy in Uruguay.

Several women entrepreneurs shared their journeys, the challenges they have faced, and the strategies they have used to transform them into opportunities. Participants included Ruralanas, Ecodeporte Circular, Aziza, LaJay, Pika, Magma Relief, and Agustina Barreto-all examples of women-led businesses and a source of inspiration for future entrepreneurs.
