Keep the holidays happy and safe for your pets

Keep the holidays happy and safe for your pets

Published on December 12, 2025

The holidays are full of sights, sounds and treats we enjoy, but they can be stressful or even dangerous for our furry family members.

SEAACA offers these quick tips to help keep pets safe and comfortable during the celebrations.

Skip the bones

Avoid giving pets table scraps, especially bones. Poultry bones can splinter and cause serious injury.

Decorate with care

Keep electrical cords and candles out of reach so curious paws, noses and tails stay safe.

Watch those plants

Holiday plants like poinsettias, holly and mistletoe can be toxic if chewed or eaten. Keep them where pets can't reach them.

Pet-safe gift wrap

Bells, ribbons, string and small toys on packages can be choking hazards. Store wrapped gifts where pets can't tear into them.

Go easy on the treats

Rich holiday foods like buttery turkey skin, nuts, candy and chocolate can make pets very sick. Keep them on their regular food and be sure alcoholic drinks and party snacks are kept well out of reach.

Think before you gift a pet

Rather than surprising someone with a pet, consider giving a gift card and a pet supply item, and let them choose a pet that fits their lifestyle at the right time. Pets deserve forever homes, and adoptions made with care are more likely to be permanent.

With a few simple precautions, you can enjoy a festive holiday season while keeping your pets safe and part of the fun.
