Interim State Geologist and Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) Director Ranie Lynds will provide a presentation as part of the University of Wyoming School of Energy Resources Distinguished Speaker Series Friday, Oct. 3.
Lynds will speak from noon-1 p.m. in the UW Energy Innovation Center's Encana Auditorium. The free lunch presentation is open to all students, members of the campus community and the public.
Recently appointed as the new interim director of the WSGS by Gov. Mark Gordon, Lynds is a highly experienced geologist who has been with the WSGS since 2012, most recently serving as the energy and mineral resources manager.
During her tenure, her work has included research on oil and gas, oversight of the STATEMAP and Earth MRI programs, and leadership on airborne geophysical surveys across the state. She also has worked on coal-bed natural gas drill rigs in Colorado's San Juan Basin, dabbled in Utah's uranium industry and spent several years studying geologic carbon sequestration in Wyoming's basins.
Lynds holds a B.S. in geology and an M.S. in geology and geophysics, both from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. from UW, where she specialized in fluvial sedimentology.
Her presentation will explore the comprehensive and multifaceted contributions of the WSGS to the state's economic vitality.
"We couldn't be more excited to welcome Ranie to the Distinguished Speaker Series," says SER Director of Outreach Christine Reed. "The Wyoming State Geological Survey isn't just a partner to the School of Energy Resources; they are our neighbors with shared interest in the economic success of the state. Having Ranie share her insights is a perfect opportunity to see the deep geologic data and expertise the WSGS provides, which is often foundational to work we are doing here at SER."
