A new article in Public Health Reports, "Completing the Continuum of Public Health Education," revisits ASPPH's 2015 Framing the Future (FTF) report and advances one of its most forward-looking ideas: the continuum of public health education. What began as an aspirational concept has evolved into an actionable framework that more intentionally connects educational pathways with workforce needs and career progression across the field. The article highlights the rapid growth of undergraduate public health education, which is now approaching parity with MPH degree production.

This expansion has occurred alongside mounting financial pressures on graduate education, reinforcing the need to better align how students enter and progress through public health training. Rather than viewing degree programs in isolation, the continuum framework emphasizes a more integrated, lifecycle approach to education.

Efforts to operationalize this vision are gaining momentum. The National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE) is advancing a tiered certification model spanning high school-level entry through master's-level competencies, helping to define and validate skills at multiple stages of the workforce pipeline. At the same time, innovations such as 5-year BSPH/MPH programs, strengthened community college transfer pathways, and greater integration of faculty across undergraduate and graduate education are helping to bridge longstanding gaps between educational tiers.

Together, these developments position the continuum as a strategic roadmap for the future of public health education. By linking learning, credentialing, and workforce readiness, it offers a more connected and responsive system that reflects both the evolving demands of the field and the diverse entry points of its learners.
