Washington, D.C. - Today, a judge at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia issued a preliminary injunctionfor yet another one of Donald Trump's bans on offshore wind. In December 2025, Donald Trump's Department of Interior issued an all-out pause on all offshore wind projects, including projects that were nearly completed. Today, a judge ruled that the Empire offshore wind project off the coast of New York may resume construction.
During his questioning, Judge Carl Nichols said the Trump administration's attorney defending this ban was "all over the map."
The Empire Wind project is expected to add over 1,000 stable, union jobs in the region and power half a million homes with clean, affordable, renewable energy.
"We are pleased to see yet another ruling in favor of renewable, affordable offshore wind energy," said Sierra Club Senior Advisor on Offshore Wind Nancy Pyne."American families from coast to coast deserve to know that reliable energy does not have to come at the expense of their health, their wallets, or their futures. Offshore wind is here and ready to be deployed to provide clean and cheap energy for families when we need it most."
"It is critical for New York's energy future, and New Yorkers' wallets, that Empire Wind completes construction and connects its 54 turbines to the power grid," said Allyson Samuell, Sierra Club Senior Campaign Representative in New York. "Already, the project has provided our local communities with good, union jobs. Now it's time for the project to cross the finish line and begin powering 500,000 homes with cleaner, cheaper, homegrown energy."
