Washington, DC- Today, the House Ways and Means Committee included H.R. 9495 in their section of Donald Trump's absurdly named "Big Beautiful Bill".

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Ben Jealous released the following statement:

"Allowing any administration to label an American organization it disagrees with or simply does not like as 'terrorists' is not just wrong, it is unamerican. Congressional Republicans' deeply disturbing power grab should alarm every freedom-loving person in our country.

"This effort must be stopped. No President - Republican or Democrat - should be allowed to turn the tools of government on the very people it is meant to serve. Make no mistake - it will not stop with this Administration. Every subsequent President could do the same with its opponents, abusing its power to go after anyone who gets in their way. The result would be that our nation would lose people and organizations who go to work every day to keep our air and water clean, support veterans, feed the hungry, and advocate to protect and improve our lives and our communities across the country.

"Congress must stop this power grab in its tracks and reject this dangerous legislation before it moves another inch."
