Meeting of the Steering Committee of the Rome Process on Development and Immigration at the Foreign Ministry

As part of the follow-up to the Conference on Development and Immigration, chaired in Rome in July 2023 by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the Steering Committee of the Rome Process met today to examine and adopt 13 projects selected by the three Working Groups dedicated to immigration and security, economy and development, as well as climate and energy.

The Rome Process promotes a holistic and cooperative approach to immigration, addressing its root causes, combating the exploitation of immigrants and protecting refugees and vulnerable migrants along migration routes, involving countries of origin, transit and destination. The projects adopted concern strategic sectors such as energy, vocational training, sustainable agricultural supply chains, strengthening of abilities to manage immigration and resilience at the local level. The projects were selected on the basis of their level of development and maturity, the consensus of the beneficiary countries and their ability to attract additional funding, in line with the principles of the Mattei Plan.

During the meeting, chaired by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and opened by the Deputy Secretary-General with acting powers, Amb. Lo Cascio, the centrality of the "Rome Process Mattei Plan Financing Facility", established by Italy together with the African Development Bank and the United Arab Emirates as a tool for co-financing the initiatives adopted, was reaffirmed.
