Landfill to close at 2 p.m. May 15 due to wind

Due to high winds, the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center will close 2 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2025. Questions? Call 319-356-5185.

Based on the forecast, it is likely that winds will bring an early closure on Friday, too. Please be reminded that the landfill closes at noon on Saturdays. If a landfill visit is needed this week, it is recommended to go early Friday or Saturday.

Visit icgov.org/landfill for information about the Landfill and its services.

Why we close for high winds

Depending upon the direction and speed, windy conditions can provide a challenge for the control of litter in and around the Iowa City Landfill. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources requires that we comply with litter control standards in order to maintain our landfill permit. Closing the landfill allows us to contain, control and pick wind-blown litter during a wind event.
