Cobb 911 Creates Wellness Lounge for First, First Responders

The Cobb County Department of Emergency Communications (DEC) has unveiled a new indoor wellness space to support the mental health and wellbeing of its 911 professionals. With the support of the Cobb County Public Safety Foundation, the new wellness space provides a much-needed retreat from the chaotic nature of the communications center.

The wellness lounge will serve as a complement to Cobb 911's existing outdoor wellness garden. The garden, completed in April 2022, is a spot favored by DEC team members for a moment of quiet amidst nature, but Georgia's unpredictable weather limits its use. The new space, located in a former multipurpose area, provides a peaceful, climate-controlled environment that promotes rest, relaxation, and recovery. It features calming lighting, comfortable seating, and soothing décor. These elements are designed to help reduce stress and promote mindfulness.

"Our emergency communications officers constantly handle high-stress situations and emotional calls," said DEC Director Melissa Alterio. "This new space is another way we are prioritizing the health and wellness of our team. Giving them a space to reset and take care of themselves so they can continue with our mission of taking care of others."

The lounge is part of Cobb 911's Wellness Initiative, a program launched in November of 2024 with the help of the Cobb County Public Safety Foundation. The initiative aims to foster a healthier, more supportive work environment, which includes access to mental health resources, an after-hours communication protocol, an emphasis on healthy boundaries, prioritization of self-care, and an overall culture change.

The wellness initiative, garden, and lounge space are all extensions of the DEC's internal employee wellness program G.R.O.W., an acronym for Growth, Restoration, Oneness, and Wellness. This program also supports the department's Health & Wellness and Morale committees.

The Cobb County Public Safety Foundation played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life through fundraising efforts and generous support. The foundation has been a part of numerous initiatives supporting the wellbeing of Cobb's public safety professionals.

Cobb County 911 remains committed to leading the way in prioritizing health and wellness in the emergency communications profession.
