PITTSBURGH - The United Steelworkers (USW) today said that the union has reached tentative agreement with Cleveland-Cliffs on a new contract covering roughly 3,000 total workers at the company's iron ore mines and processing facilities in Minnesota and Michigan.

USW International Vice President Emil Ramirez, who chairs Cliffs negotiations for the union, credited the determination of the bargaining committee and the solidarity shown by members at all the facilities.

"Thanks to the hard work of the committee and the solidarity of the membership, we have won fair contracts that provide economic and contract language improvements without sacrificing the security of our jobs or benefits," Ramirez said.

Ramirez said Steelworkers stood together to demand fairness and investments in the future of the union-represented facilities.

"On the Iron Range and Upper Peninsula, USW members have supported families and sustained communities for generations," Ramirez said. "This entire industry was built by Steelworkers, and we are determined to ensure that these jobs remain for generations to come."

The USW has not set a date for ratification yet, but the committee will review the details of the proposed new agreements with members in the coming days and weeks.

USW members at Cliffs have been working under contracts that have been extended since their original expirations on September 1, 2026, while negotiations proceeded.

The USW (https://www.usw.org(opens in new tab)) represents 850,000 workers employed in the metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of members in tech, higher education, public sector and service occupations.
