Panel discussion celebrates DLA disability workforce successes

COLUMBUS, Ohio -

In celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime hosted an impactful panel discussion Oct. 16 at the DLA Land and Maritime Operations Center Auditorium.

This year's theme, "Access to Career Success for All," underscored the importance of ensuring equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities in the workforce. The event brought together a diverse group of speakers and participants, highlighting the strides being made to foster an inclusive environment within the Defense Department and beyond.

The program opened with remarks from DLA Land and Maritime Deputy Commander Kenneth Watson, who emphasized the organization's dedication to creating a workplace where every individual, regardless of ability, can thrive.

"I firmly believe that DLA is established as a model employer of individuals with disabilities," he said. "We as an Agency, continue to work towards increasing those employment opportunities for qualified individuals ensuring equitable access for all."

The panel discussion hosted by the Office of Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity featured three DLA employees, who shared their experiences navigating the workforce as individuals with disabilities and provided insight into the challenges and opportunities they've encountered throughout their careers.

Mike McCoy, DLA Land and Maritime's disability program coordinator, spoke about the role of the Reasonable Accommodations Program, which ensures employees with disabilities have the tools and support they need to succeed. McCoy highlighted how critical accommodations are to leveling the playing field and enabling individuals to contribute fully to their work.

Gregory Ramsey, a senior business advisor with DLA Human Resources, has been recognized as a DOD award recipient for his outstanding contributions as an employee with a disability. Ramsey shared his journey within DLA, explaining how the organization's commitment to accessibility has empowered him to excel professionally.

"I feel like my journey at DLA exemplifies what it means to have access to career success," he said. "I've done my part to work hard and expand myself, but without an organization that is willing to value and grant opportunities, those things cannot happen."

His story illuminated the broader message of the month - that disability does not limit potential but rather demonstrates the importance of inclusivity in achieving career success.

The third panelist, Candace Ronny, who works as an inventory management specialist, offered her unique perspective as someone who was hired through the Workforce Recruitment Program in 2021. Ronny reflected on her transition into DLA and how the organization's focus on diversity and inclusion helped her grow both personally and professionally.

"DLA went above and beyond to give me things that I need to make my job easier, and now every day is a great day at work," she said.

She also spoke to the value of the WRP, which connects qualified students and recent graduates with disabilities to federal employment opportunities.

"The program was such a great opportunity for me," she said. "DLA provided me the equipment I needed quickly and efficiently, so I could be successful in my job here."

The panelists collectively stressed that access to reasonable accommodations is key to unlocking potential and providing pathways for success for individuals with disabilities. By creating a culture of support and understanding, organizations like DLA are leading the way in ensuring that everyone - regardless of ability - has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to their mission.

NDEAM is observed annually each October. First established in 1945 by Congress, and expanded in 1988, NDEAM serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring full access to employment for people with disabilities. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of workers with disabilities and to raise awareness of the value that inclusivity brings to both the workforce and the economy.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy leads the nationwide campaign to promote NDEAM and encourages employers, employees and advocates to engage in activities that support people with disabilities. Each year's theme focuses on a different aspect of employment equality.

As organizations nationwide continue to make strides toward accessibility and inclusion, event organizers said the hope is that this year's theme will inspire further action and awareness-ultimately leading to more equitable opportunities for all.
