Update #14: City of St. Petersburg Begins to Assess Damage from Hurricane Helene

September 27, 2024 - The City of St. Petersburg is beginning to assess damage from Hurricane Helene. Mayor Kenneth T. Welch is holding a press conference at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, at the St. Pete Emergency Operations Center, located at the St. Pete Police Department (1301 1st Ave. N). The press conference will be streamed live on the City's Facebook.

City of St. Petersburg Situation Report:

  • The City experienced more than 6ft of storm surge.

  • 100.6 miles of road impacted by flooding.

  • All boat ramps in St. Pete are closed.

  • Access to barrier islands are closed.

  • Approx. 24 traffic lights are out - officers are directing traffic.

  • St. Pete Fire Rescue responded to 3 structure fires last night.

  • As of this morning, first responders have rescued a total of 70 people.

  • A total of 750 individuals at the Gibbs High and John Hopkins Middle shelters.

  • Six Fire Rescue boats are deploying to go to Shore Acres, Snell Isle and Venetian Isles for search and rescue.

  • As of 7 a.m., the City has processed more than 300 calls to our emergency lines.

  • City crews are working to clear roadways.

  • Approx. 85 reports of downed trees.

  • All City brush sites are open, other than 62nd Ave. location.

Sewer Disruption Service Update:

  • The City made the difficult decision to turn off power at the Northeast Sewer Treatment Plant.

  • Residents/businesses located north of 30th Avenue N and east of I-275/Haines Road (shaded in yellow in the attached map) are impacted by this situation. See map for reference.

  • Impacted residents/businesses should not drain water, take showers, do laundry, or flush toilets. Draining water will cause sewage to back up into homes/businesses.

  • An emergency contractor is now on site assisting City teams with getting the plant back online.
