Salt Lake City officials and community leaders celebrated the opening of the City's newest affordable housing development, commemorating another milestone of historic investment in affordable housing since 2021.
Located at 144 S. 500 East, the 144 South apartments are just minutes from downtown and along major transit lines. This modern, energy-efficient complex will provide 110 affordable studio and one-bedroom units for residents earning at or below 60% of the area median income (AMI). These neighbors work in the capital's restaurants, libraries, public safety, and other jobs supporting the local community.
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, who also serves as the executive director of the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City (RDA), highlighted the project's broader impact.
"Affordable housing is a cornerstone of a thriving city, and projects like 144 South are one way we are actively addressing the housing challenges our residents face," said Mendenhall. "My administration is committed to creating a city where all Salt Lakers, regardless of income, have access to the resources they need to lead stable and fulfilling lives."
The six-story building goes beyond providing housing, offering a suite of amenities that include a co-working business center, clubhouse, fitness facility, outdoor deck, dog wash, bike storage room, and even a 420-square-foot retail space in the main lobby. Designed with sustainability in mind, the project meets Energy-Star requirements, contributing to Salt Lake City's environmental goals.
"As I look at this incredible project, I can't help but think about how much stronger we are when we come together to lift each other up," said RDA Board Chair Alejandro Puy. "This development is a reminder that our cities, our communities, are only as strong as the opportunities we create for the people who call them home. Affordable housing like this is about dignity, hope, and the belief that everyone deserves the chance to build a life they're proud of."
"This development isn't just about providing homes-it's about creating a foundation for future generations," Peter Corroon, the project developer, said. "We're proud to contribute to Salt Lake City's growth with a project that emphasizes sustainability, community, and opportunity. The impact of affordable housing extends far beyond the physical structure; it changes lives."
The development was made possible through a $1.7 million loan from the RDA's Housing Development Loan Program (HDLP), which provides critical financial assistance to affordable housing initiatives. The 144 South team, selected through a competitive process, led the project in collaboration with:
The property will be managed by EMG Management, which manages thousands of affordable housing units in Utah.
