India's defence technology sector is poised for a major boost as Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL) has announced a massive ?12,800 crore investment in robotics, drone manufacturing, and advanced deep-tech projects. The initiative is expected to significantly strengthen India's indigenous defence ecosystem while accelerating the country's push toward self-reliance in critical military technologies.
Solar Defence's investment will focus on building a large-scale manufacturing ecosystem for unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs), robotics, and advanced defence technologies. The project will be implemented over the next several years and is part of a broader strategy to enhance India's domestic capability in next-generation defence systems.
The company plans to establish advanced facilities capable of producing around 10,000 drones and 1,000 robots annually, marking one of the most ambitious private sector defence manufacturing initiatives in the country.
A major portion of the project will be located in the MIHAN Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Nagpur, where Solar Defence has secured over 220 acres of land for building a large manufacturing complex dedicated to unmanned systems and defence equipment.
The facility is expected to manufacture a wide range of drones from short-range UAVs with a range of about 15 km to advanced Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones used for surveillance and strategic missions.
Beyond drones, the project will also focus on humanoid robots, robotic dogs, and other advanced robotic systems, reflecting a growing global trend toward autonomous systems in defence operations.
The project is also expected to create around 6,800 jobs, contributing to regional economic growth while strengthening India's defence manufacturing ecosystem.
Industry experts believe that the investment aligns closely with India's "Make in India" and "Atmanirbhar Bharat" initiatives, which aim to reduce reliance on foreign defence imports and build a strong domestic defence industry.
Solar Defence, a subsidiary of Solar Industries India Limited, has already established itself as a key player in defence manufacturing, supplying technologies such as loitering munitions, rockets, and drone systems to the Indian armed forces.

The growing use of drones and autonomous systems in modern warfare has made such investments strategically important. By scaling domestic production of UAVs and robotics, India aims to strengthen its defence preparedness while also positioning itself as a global supplier of advanced unmanned systems.
If executed successfully, Solar Defence's ?12,800 crore initiative could transform Nagpur into one of India's largest hubs for drone, robotics, and deep-tech defence manufacturing, accelerating innovation in the country's rapidly evolving defence technology landscape.
