Historian Michael A. Hill, speaking at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, will explore how a 1905 Supreme Court decision in an Alaska case altered America.

In his lecture, "A Brothel, the Census, and the Supreme Court: How Alaska Shaped American Empire," Hill will detail how federal officials used demographic data and racial classification in Rasmussen v. United States to set Alaska on the path toward statehood while denying that same path to the Philippines.

The UAF Department of History and the Alaska Historical Society will sponsor this free event on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 5:30 p.m. in the BP Design Theater and online via Zoom. Details are available at uaf.edu/history.
