Chip sealing starts June 15 in Berrien, Van Buren counties

COLOMA, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and contractor Pavement Maintenance Systems Inc. are chip sealing 27 miles of state highways in four locations:

This $2.9 million investment includes overband crack fill, single-course chip seal, fog seal and pavement markings.

Berrien and Van Buren

Highways:
I-196, I-196 BL and M-63

Closest communities:
Covert, South Haven

Start date:
Monday, June 15, 2026

Estimated end date:
Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026

Traffic restrictions:
Single-lane closures, traffic shifts and traffic regulators.

Jobs numbers:
Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 25 jobs.

Safety benefit:
Chip sealing will repair and preserve pavement conditions, extending the service life of the roadway and improving safety.
