Strengthening Inclusive Narratives: EU-LAC Actions at the Santiago International Film Festival (SANFIC)

07.10.2025 Strategic Communications

At SANFIC, the EU-LAC initiative supported two key activities: the Queer Incubator, where audiovisual advisor Emilio Papimija guided participants from six Latin American countries in developing stories and characters from a diversity perspective, and the conference "Cooperation between Latin America and Europe," which explored inclusive co-production practices and emerging roles such as intimacy coordinators and gender advisors.

Participation in the Queer Incubator

Thanks to the contribution of Emilio Papimija, audiovisual advisor and trainer specialized in diversity, and consultant at IntimAct, invited by the EASS, the participants in the Queer Incubator had two working sessions focused on strengthening their identities and on developing their stories from this perspective, with specific tools for character creation.

Projects from six Latin American countries took part: En piel de reptil by Noa Leporati (Chile), La casa de mamá by Jeure Tavare (Dominican Republic), Los Bustamante by Fran Bethoven (Uruguay), Punto Muerto by Lorenzo Dieguez (Argentina), Rojo contra azul by Fiora Salas-Román (Chile), and Romances anónimos by Andrea Tudela (Peru).

The project La casa de mamá by Jeure Tavare also received EU-LAC support for its participation in the MIDPOINT Intensive Queer at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Conference "Cooperation between Latin America and Europe"

The conference brought together Gabriela Sandoval (Chile), Marité Ugás (Peru), and Emilio Papimija. Building on the recommendations of the EAVE report Best practices for inclusive co-productions, the speakers shared their co-production experiences with European countries such as France, Italy, and Spain. The discussion also highlighted new professional roles developed in Europe to ensure more inclusive and safer film shoots, such as intimacy coordinators and gender advisors.

This initiative is linked to the values and objectives of the initiative EU-LAC Cinema: promoting audio-visual cooperation on youth, gender and diversity. It is part of the EU-CELAC Bi-regional Roadmap 2023-2025, presented last year at the Summit between the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Brussels. This roadmap lists some of the important milestones ahead of the forthcoming EU-CELAC 2025 Summit in Colombia in November 2025.
