Rep. Gabe Vasquez on Tax Day: My Office is Here to Help

WASHINGTON, D.C. - On April 15, 2026, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) reminded New Mexicans that his office is available to help them navigate the IRS during what is shaping up to be one of the most confusing tax seasons in recent years.

"Tax Day is no one's favorite time of year, but I worry this filing season is going to be especially frustrating for a lot of folks," said Vasquez. "Many hardworking New Mexicans may be surprised when they file and realize they don't qualify for the tax relief they were promised."

"New Mexicans deserve honesty," Vasquez continued. "Instead of confusing, temporary policies, I'm focused on real solutions that help workers and seniors actually keep more of their hard-earned pay and benefits in their pockets - not with the IRS."

If New Mexicans need help dealing with the IRS or have questions about their federal taxes, Rep. Vasquez's office is here to assist. Constituents can call (575) 323-6390 to connect with the casework team and receive support navigating the IRS filing process.

Vasquez is urging constituents to understand the facts around the Republican tax law:

  • Taxes on tips were not eliminated. Workers have continued to pay taxes on their paychecks throughout the year, and many tipped workers unfortunately won't benefit this filing season at all, as two-thirds of restaurant workers don't earn enough to qualify.
  • Taxes on overtime were not eliminated. Only certain workers qualify for the temporary deduction, leaving out many in industries like agriculture and aviation, as well as lower-income workers who earn less than $16,000 and likely need relief the most.
  • Taxes on Social Security were not eliminated. The law created a temporary, limited $6,000 deduction that fewer than half of seniors will benefit from.
  • The Republican tax law cut health care and food assistance for the working class to pay for $4 trillion in permanent, large-scale tax cuts for billionaires and wealthy corporations.

Vasquez is advocating for tax policies that deliver lasting relief for hardworking New Mexicans, including ending the sub-minimum wage and making tax relief for tipped workers permanent and strengthening Social Security so seniors can retire with dignity. He has also pushed federal agencies to provide clear, accurate guidance so Americans can file their taxes without confusion or unexpected costs after the Administration issued conflicting claims. Additionally, he has introduced a trio of bills that provides households tax relief from tariffs, supports working class families, and incentivizes employers to hire veterans.

Please note: Congressman Vasquez's office cannot file taxes on constituents' behalf.
