USTelecom to Launch Permitting "Horror Stories" Campaign in October to Highlight Needed Reforms
Today the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to move forward with its examination of state and local regulations that cause delays in the permitting process, causing millions of Americans to go without fast, reliable internet connectivity.
In addition to his recent testimony before Congress on solutions to permitting delays, USTelecom - the Broadband Association President and CEO Jonathan Spalter offered the following comment on today's FCC vote:
"By exploring reforms that will help connect more Americans to fast, reliable broadband, the FCC is meeting the moment. Tackling costly and time-consuming permitting delays will help accelerate network builds, lower deployment costs, and get modern connectivity to consumers and small businesses-especially in rural and underserved communities-faster.
These practical, pro-deployment reforms complement historic private investment and federal programs already driving broadband expansion. Streamlined processes and clear, consistent timelines mean America's broadband providers can put more dollars into digging, hanging, and lighting new networks-not into red tape. We're eager to work with the Commission and other stakeholders to ensure these common-sense steps translate into shovels in the ground and connections at the curb. Let's get building."
To advance efforts to streamline permitting reform, beginning October 1, USTelecom is launching a Halloween-themed social media campaign highlighting examples of permitting delays experienced by member providers across the country. Tune in to USTelecom on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram for more.
