NV Energy to Replace Infrastructure and Enhance System Resiliency on Angel Peak

Oct 14, 2024 11:16 AM

Starting October 14, NV Energy and partnering agencies will begin replacing aging power poles in the Angel Peak area of Mt. Charleston. NV Energy will install new poles with innovative fire mesh technology and rewire the lines with covered conductor to enhance system resilience and fire safety. Due to the steep, mountainous terrain, a helicopter will be used to conduct the work.

From October 14 through the end of the year, customers and visitors can expect to see the helicopter and heavy equipment in the area.

NV Energy has designed this work to have minimal impact on Mt. Charleston residents and visitors. There will be no new road or trail closures, and no power outages are anticipated. The helicopter will be staging at the Middle Kyle Canyon Fire Station near State Road 157 and residents and visitors may notice an increase in activity in the area through the end of the year.

The project is part of NV Energy's natural disaster protection plan, Power Safe NV. Rebuilding overhead lines and replacing poles will create a more resilient and reliable power supply. NV Energy is completing the work in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service and VM West.

The purpose of this work is to minimize the chance of infrastructure-caused wildfires and protect our communities against extreme weather events. Kyle Canyon and Angel Peak are high priorities due to the region's extreme fire risk.
