34 Large Cap Stocks Hit 52-Week Highs On Tuesday

A list of market leaders at new highs reveals a sharp divide in the fundamentals earning those prices.

Apple (AAPL), with a market value of about $4990.1 billion, has gained 19.8% over the last month. As of Tuesday, 34 Large Cap stocks from the Russell 3000 are trading at their 52-week highs, with a notable presence from financials, including Life & Health Insurance (4 names) and Property & Casualty Insurance (3 names).

The question for investors is what kind of strength this is: a price that has outrun the business, or a business that is still earning its new high. Below is the complete list.

A high price does not always mean a high valuation.

The list contains starkly different financial profiles. AbbVie (ABBV) trades at 128.2 times trailing earnings, with revenue growth of 9.5% over the last twelve months and an operating margin of 33.2%.

In contrast, JPMorgan Chase (JPM), the second-largest name on the list, trades at 16.5 times trailing earnings while its revenue grew 8.2%. Visa (V) presents another profile, with revenue growth of 14.4% and an operating margin of 67.1%.

Strength is a signal, not a conclusion.

A 52-week high means the stock is at its strongest price of the last year. This often indicates a business performing well or attracting significant investor interest. But a price is not a verdict.

The disciplined work begins after seeing the list. The task is to check whether the underlying business fundamentals, from revenue growth to margins, justify the market's current enthusiasm.

A new high tells you what the market already believes. The harder question is which of these runs management itself is underwriting. Our Guidance Momentum screen tracks exactly that: stocks where the company raised its own forward numbers.

One more pattern worth noticing: 15 of the 34 names are Financials stocks. When a whole group is making new highs together, a financials ETF like XLF is one way to own the group's strength without betting on which single name leads it from here.

Strength Is A Clue. It Is Not A Plan

A stock at its 52-week high has momentum on its side, and momentum is a real force. It is also the most crowded signal in the market, and the difference between a run that lasts and one that tops is always the business underneath.

Checking that business, across thousands of names, is how the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio is assembled: roughly 30 companies that pass the quality screens, rebalanced on rules. It has a track record of outpacing a benchmark that combines all major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. Let the highs point; let the discipline decide.
