One Year Later, Trump-Vance Admin’s “Affordability Czar” Is Nowhere to Be Found Arrow

One year ago today, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the Trump administration would appoint an "affordability czar" who would focus on lowering costs. Two weeks later, Bessent said the administration would announce the czar in "about ten days." Now, a year later, Donald Trump's "affordability czar" is nowhere to be found.

Americans consistently rank the economy and cost of living as their most important issues as prices remain at record-highs and the job market is in turmoil. Meanwhile, Trump and JD Vance have offered no real plans to bring prices down for everyday Americans.

In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:

"What ever happened to the 'affordability czar?' This broken promise is just another example of how this administration has betrayed everyday Americans after promising to 'lower costs on Day One.' Families are being pushed to the brink, forced to contend with massive grocery prices and utility bills, unaffordable rent and child care, and skyrocketing health care premiums because of Trump's failed economic policies. Trump doesn't even pretend to care about following through on his promises to 'make America affordable again' - and voters have had enough of his lies and betrayals."

Under Trump's watch, prices are sky-high, job growth has slowed to historic lows, layoff announcements topped one million last year, wage growth has stagnated, and health care premiums have more than doubled for millions. Americans paid an additional $2,120 last year due to Trump's inflation and household debt is at an all time high.

After the Supreme Court struck down Trump's illegal tariffs, he doubled down on his reckless trade war. Ninety-five percent of tariff costs have been passed onto American consumers, and companies across industries are raising costs again. A majority of voters across parties disapprove of Trump's tariffs, and 70% say Trump's tariffs have raised costs.
