Search for new Vice President and Director of Athletics progresses

UNM continues its national search for its next Vice President and Director of Athletics as it reaches the recruitment phase. The search was launched following the departure of Eddie Nuñez on Aug. 17, 2024. David Williams was appointed Interim Vice President and Director of Athletics on Aug. 21.

UNM President Garnett S. Stokes emphasized the importance of this position, stating, "The Vice President and Director of Athletics plays a crucial role in advancing our university's mission and values through athletics. We are seeking a visionary leader who can build upon our recent successes and guide Lobo Athletics to new heights."

The university has engaged Parker Executive Search, a renowned firm specializing in higher education and athletics leadership placements, to assist in the recruiting efforts. A comprehensive position description is available, outlining the duties, responsibilities, and values sought in this high-profile role. Key responsibilities for the new Vice President and Director of Athletics will include:

  • Overseeing all NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic programs
  • Ensuring alignment with UNM's overall mission and strategic goals
  • Managing financial operations and fundraising efforts
  • Maintaining compliance with NCAA and Mountain West Conference regulations
  • Fostering positive relationships with alumni, donors, and the broader community

Parker has been meeting with numerous constituent groups over the past several weeks to inform the search process, including both virtual and in-person sessions. The recruitment phase is now underway. A candidate pool will be developed for the committee's review, and a recommendation will be advanced to the President for her consideration.

Over the past several years, UNM Athletics achieved significant milestones, including 53 NCAA tournament appearances, 22 Mountain West titles, and 1,517 student-athletes named to Mountain West All-Academic teams. The new leader will be expected to build on this foundation while addressing challenges such as enhancing key program competitiveness, navigating conference stability, and managing emerging financial commitments that support student-athletes.

In a campuswide message today, President Stokes encouraged the Lobo community to participate in the search process by suggesting potential candidates. "The impact of this position extends beyond athletics," said Stokes. "It enhances our university's reputation, engages the community, and contributes to the overall student experience." Nominations can be submitted through the Candidate Nomination Link provided on the UNM Executive Search website.

The search committee is chaired by Del Archuleta, who is highly regarded in our state, and is comprised of university leaders, faculty, alumni, and community representatives, who are charged with reviewing applications and conducting interviews in the coming months. The goal is to have a Vice President and Director of Athletics in place by the beginning of 2025. For full consideration, interested candidates should submit their applications, including a cover letter, resume or curriculum vitae, and list of references, to Parker Executive Search by Oct. 25, 2024.
