Council backs pathway to return New Year's Eve fireworks

Kiama Municipal Council has endorsed a pathway aimed at bringing New Year's Eve fireworks back to Kiama, while ensuring any event remains financially responsible.

Council has allocated $20,000 in its 2026-27 Budget as a contribution towards a New Year's Eve fireworks display and will now work with the Tourism & Economic Advisory Committee to seek sponsorship, grants and other external funding to deliver the event at the Kiama Harbour foreshore.

Mayor Cameron McDonald said the resolution struck an appropriate balance between responding to community expectations and recognising Council's ongoing financial responsibilities.

"We know many people in our community would like to see fireworks return to Kiama, but we also have a responsibility to ensure any event is financially sustainable," Cr McDonald said.

"This decision gives us the opportunity to work with local businesses, sponsors and government to see whether we can deliver a fireworks event without placing unnecessary pressure on Council's finances."

Under the adopted approach, Council will first seek the funding required to stage fireworks at the Harbour foreshore. If that funding cannot be secured, Council will investigate an alternative location that avoids expensive road closures and associated costs. Should neither option prove achievable, Council will deliver a scaled-back Council-led New Year's Eve activation featuring extended trading opportunities and entertainment to support local businesses and create a vibrant atmosphere across the town centre.

Council also resolved to actively pursue Australian and NSW Government grant opportunities to support future New Year's Eve celebrations.

Cr McDonald said the resolution provided certainty for the community while allowing Council to pursue the best possible outcome.

"Our preference is clear. If we can secure the necessary external funding, we'd love to see fireworks return. If we can't, we'll still ensure Kiama has a safe, enjoyable and family-friendly New Year's Eve celebration."

Planning for the 2026 New Year's Eve event will now commence, with Council to work alongside local businesses and community stakeholders as funding opportunities are explored.
