Mi Casa es Tu Casa exhibit now open at Illinois State Museum in Springfield

Exhibit highlights the experiences of Beardstown High School Spanish Club students

SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois State Museum has opened a new community-curated exhibit, "Mi Casa es Tu Casa," developed in partnership with students from the Beardstown High School Spanish Club. The exhibit explores themes of identity, community and hometown through the students' lived experiences.

The exhibit is on display through May 10. Highlights include a quinceañera dress, oral histories collected by students and cooking videos demonstrating recipes from Latin American countries. Through personal artifacts and multimedia elements, the exhibit centers student voices and perspectives.

"The exhibit is not just a project; it is a compilation of real-life stories that demonstrate each person has a story to tell," said Gabriella Montoya, Spanish Club adviser and teacher at Beardstown High School. "I am very proud of each of the students who participated and shared a part of their experiences, allowing us into their world. This is a step toward sharing those experiences with everyone."

"'Mi Casa es Tu Casa' represents a great deal of hard work and love," said Jenn Edginton, director of the Illinois State Museum. "Students worked closely with museum staff to create an exhibit that keeps their voices front and center. We are incredibly proud of their dedication and creativity."
