November/December 2024 Spotlight: Valon Alford

1. Why would you encourage someone in the community to apply to be on a board, committee, or commission?

As a native of Durham, it is imperative that our voices and insight are part of the rapid change we see in our community. As Durham grows to embrace its needs for the future, decisions are being made every day on all levels about every aspect of life. Serving on a board, committee, or commission is a great way to advocate for our needs with nuance that directly informs decision-making.

2. What do you enjoy most about serving on your particular board?

I enjoy learning about all of the work going on behind the scenes with the local government, its departments, and community stakeholders. There is always more work to be done. However, volunteering has helped me to understand how multi-faceted the work is to help our community thrive. From understanding federal legislation and mandates to various distinguishing funding sources for vulnerable populations and ensuring fairness in reviewing RFPs, I have gained a wealth of knowledge and appreciation for the diligence it takes to run our city efficiently.

3. What is your favorite part about living in Durham?

Durham is vibrant! I love Durham's rich history as Black Wall Street, and how that history informs our community today. Durham is home to thriving colleges and world-class healthcare. It is full of life and opportunity. Most of all, my family is here in Durham. Durham is home. Durham is love.
