WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), which represents 1.2 million essential workers in grocery, meatpacking, food processing, retail, and other essential industries, released the following statement in honor of May Day, or International Workers' Day.
UFCW International President Milton Jones said:
"May Day offers us a chance to celebrate the millions of workers who keep our country running, including the 1.2 million UFCW members at the forefront of North America's essential industries, working day-in and day-out to keep our communities fed and loved ones healthy.
"This day also allows us to reflect on the strides we've made towards protecting workers' rights and the work still ahead of us. At a time when politicians attack and weaken labor rights, as well as programs working families rely on and safety standards in the workplace, workers' greatest strength is found in solidarity.
"When workers organize, they can push back against irresponsible government rules that threaten safety on the line. They can demand wages that combat the rising cost of living. And they can stand united against intimidation from powerful special interests. The UFCW is proud to stand arm-in-arm with working families on May Day and every day."
