The city of Goodyear and the Goodyear Police Department are helping residents recognize and avoid scams through a community awareness campaign centered around the message "Stop. Slow Down. Don't Become A Victim."
Scams are a growing problem nationwide, with billions of dollars lost each year to fraud. Criminals continually adapt their tactics, using new technology and increasingly sophisticated schemes to target victims. Phone calls, text messages and emails are often used to create a false sense of urgency, fear or excitement, pressuring people to act quickly without verifying the situation.
The campaign aims to reduce scam victimization, especially among senior residents, by increasing awareness of common tactics and encouraging timely reporting to the Goodyear Police Department.
"Because of the pressure to act fast, victims often don't see the red flags until it's too late," said Goodyear Police Chief Brian Issitt. "In fact, pressure to take action immediately is a red flag. Always remember, if something feels off, it probably is."
