City Launches Campaign to Combat Nationwide Scam Threats

The city of Goodyear and the Goodyear Police Department are helping residents recognize and avoid scams through a community awareness campaign centered around the message "Stop. Slow Down. Don't Become A Victim."

Scams are a growing problem nationwide, with billions of dollars lost each year to fraud. Criminals continually adapt their tactics, using new technology and increasingly sophisticated schemes to target victims. Phone calls, text messages and emails are often used to create a false sense of urgency, fear or excitement, pressuring people to act quickly without verifying the situation.

The campaign aims to reduce scam victimization, especially among senior residents, by increasing awareness of common tactics and encouraging timely reporting to the Goodyear Police Department.

"Because of the pressure to act fast, victims often don't see the red flags until it's too late," said Goodyear Police Chief Brian Issitt. "In fact, pressure to take action immediately is a red flag. Always remember, if something feels off, it probably is."

Residents are encouraged to watch for common warning signs including:

  • Immediate demands for payment, particularly through gift cards, cryptocurrency, gold or wire transfers
  • Threats of arrest or legal action
  • Requests for personal, banking or financial information
  • Instructions to keep the transaction or conversation secret

While scam tactics evolve, the core safety steps remain consistent:

  • Stop communication immediately
  • Never send money or share personal information
  • Contact the organization directly using a verified phone number
  • Report suspicious activity to the Goodyear Police Department

Goodyear remains committed to public safety and proactive education efforts that empower residents with the knowledge and tools they need to protect themselves. If you believe you've been the victim of a scam, please contact the Goodyear Police Department's non-emergency line at 623-932-1220.
