Former Assistant Principal Charged

GREENSBORO, NC (July 7, 2026) - A former assistant principal at Hairston Middle School is charged with discharging a firearm on educational property.

Charlie Wardell Smith, 54, was recently charged by criminal summons for the offense, which occurred on the evening of May 25 at the school campus, 3911 Naco Road.

Smith told investigators that he responded to the school after receiving a call about an alarm that was activated that evening. Smith said he canceled the police response since he was close to campus.

Smith said he encountered an intruder in the school, who ran outside. Smith said he fired a shot into the air, away from the suspect, in an effort to scare the individual.

No students or other staff were at the school at the time of this incident. Smith later resigned from his position.
