Training Series Strengthens Bioprospecting and Bio-product Development in Southeast Asia's Biosphere Reserves

Technical experts from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam shared case studies and best practices. By integrating scientific knowledge, traditional practices, and sustainable business approaches, participants engaged in interactive discussions on branding, marketing, and the promotion of Biosphere Reserve-based products.

More than 120 local stakeholders joined the training in person, while over 40 participants, including biosphere reserve managers, government agencies, NGOs, and Man and the Biosphere (MAB) national committees in the region, participated online. In-person participants visited Jatimulyo Village and Donorejo Village in the Menoreh area to gain first-hand insights into local community products that integrate conservation and livelihood objectives.

In Jatimulyo village, participants learned about a successful bird-friendly village programme centred on a Nest Adoption Scheme, which protects rare songbirds while generating income through ecotourism. It creates a sustainable model that turns former bird trappers into conservationists, boosting bird diversity, and providing economic benefits for the local communities. While in Donorejo village, participants observed the breeding and development of the Kaligesing Etawa, indigenous crossbreed goats. This area is well known for producing both milk and meat from this type of goat.
